Tomás Barreiro: The Music Behind La Cocina and ...Y llegaron de noche

Mexican composer Tomás Barreiro has recently worked on two notable projects: the film La Cocina, directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios, and the series ...Y llegaron de noche, starring and directed by Eugenio Derbez.

La Cocina: A Sonic Portrait of Chaos and Life in New York

In La Cocina (2024), available on MAX, Barreiro composed a soundtrack that accompanies the frenetic yet intimate story of a group of workers in the kitchen of a New York restaurant. Based on the play by Arnold Wesker, the film offers a raw look at the lives of immigrants in the United States and was acclaimed after its premiere at the Berlinale. Barreiro's music plays a key role in shaping the film’s narrative rhythm, capturing both the intensity of kitchen work and the introspective moments of its characters.

...Y llegaron de noche: A Musical Tribute to Classic Cinema

In the series ...Y llegaron de noche (2024), available on ViX, Tomás Barreiro explores a different musical approach, delivering a composition that pays homage to classic cinema. The series, produced and starring Eugenio Derbez, tells the story behind the Spanish-language version of Dracula filmed in 1931—an alternative production shot on the same sets as the Bela Lugosi version. Barreiro’s music enhances the nostalgic and humorous tone of the series, blending jazz, orchestral arrangements, and percussion to transport the audience to the golden age of cinema.
